LTE & 5G

Mobile networks

Self-Interference Cancellation technology enables LTE and 5G mobile operators to get the most out of their spectrum investments as they compete in the rapidly growing mobile broadband market. Self-Interference Cancellation gives mobile infrastructure and device vendors a way around the limitations of conventional filter technology. Kumu Networks’ Self-Interference Cancellation technology allows vendors to build base stations that can detect and adapt to interference; to design lower-cost and lower-loss mobile devices that support a plethora of frequency bands without the overhead of fixed filters; and to massively densify mobile networks using smart repeaters and full-duplex relay nodes–a particularly important requirement as the industry moves to higher frequencies with limited propagation.

Unlicensed and spectrum sharing applications

Unlicensed technologies such as WiFi and Bluetooth were conceived to encourage spectrum sharing. Now there are literally billions of unlicensed devices in use–many of them supporting multiple standards and simultaneous operation on multiple channels. Self-Interference Cancellation technology is key to ensuring the continued growth of this vibrant market, both in the currently popular 900MHz, 2.4 GHz, and 5 GHz bands, as well as new bands such as the 3.5 GHz Citizens Broadband Radio Service (CBRS) and the “White Spaces” spectrum reclaimed from over-the-air TV broadcasting. As more radios are squeezed into consumer electronics, self-interference becomes the biggest obstacle to further innovation–an obstacle that only Self-Interference Cancellation technology can overcome. In addition, by enabling Listen-While-Talking, Self-Interference Cancellation allows the overall network to make optimum use of the available spectrum.

Cable networks

Full-duplex communication on the same frequency was originally developed for wireless, but the cable industry was first to set a full-duplex standard (DOCSIS 3.1 FDX). While cable operators can send data at very high speeds downstream to customers, providing higher upstream data rates is challenging, and will become important as operators face increasing competition from fiber, wireless, and even DSL services. Determined to increase their upstream capacity without replacing millions of CPE devices, the cable industry extended the upstream spectrum to overlap the downstream spectrum, creating a need for full-duplex operation. The unique solution devised by CableLabs requires full-duplex only on the infrastructure side, but it introduces challenging new filtering requirements on the customer premises side–requirements that are best solved using Kumu Networks’ Self-Interference Cancellation technology.

Military vehicles

Military, Defense, and First Responders

Military communication needs are among the most demanding. Tactical communication must not only be 100% reliable, it must be highly portable and provide robust performance even in the face of interference from nearby radios and enemy jammers. Military radios typically transmit at high power levels to maximize reach–unintentionally creating greater interference to co-located communication systems. Kumu Networks’ Self-Interference Cancellation solutions permit the defense industry to pack more radios onto a single platform–whether on the ground, in the air, or at sea. Self-Interference Cancellation is also a promising technology for increasing radar system resolution in military, aviation, and automotive applications.

Mesh networks are used extensively by both the military and first responders to ensure adequate network coverage and capacity where local infrastructure either doesn’t exist or has been damaged. With Kumu Networks’ Self-Interference Cancellation technology, mesh networks can achieve higher overall capacity and lower end-to-end latency–all while simplifying frequency planning and management.
